DEAR READERS!

Cognitive science has a short history and a long past. The discipline with its present name and form arose in the second half of the last century to solve the most complex problems of world science: the search for mechanisms and fundamental principles of mind functioning. It is a truly interdisciplinary field of research and development, bringing together specialists in cognitive psychology, linguistics, psycho- and neurophysiology, neurology and psychiatry, biochemistry, genetics, artificial intelligence, mathematical physics, logic and philosophy of knowledge. The common goal dictates the necessity to harmonize paradigms, approaches and methods of scientific research and create on this basis new cognitive technologies able to improve the conventional principles of studying and correcting elementary and higher human cognitive functions in the near future and even today. This is also relevant in the field of medicine, especially in the context of increasingly tough requirements for human health due to living conditions in the world today. It is obvious that modern technologies are impossible without a novel methodology. Therefore, it has been decided to publish a special topical issue of journal “Sovremennye tehnologii v medicine” (“Modern Technologies in Medicine”). The management of the International Association for Cognitive Studies — a professional association of cognitive scientists of Russia — is grateful to the Editorial Board for cooperation and opportunity to introduce a wide range of applied cognitive research findings to the readers. This issue presents reviews, conceptual articles, innovative research, and technological solutions. Some of these solutions are ready to be implemented in clinical practice, while others are waiting for their implementation in the nearest or more distant future. Dealing mainly with Russian-based research, the issue is fully international: scientists from the UK, Germany, Spain, the USA, and Finland are among the authors of the articles.
