Present-day knowledge of Russian and foreign researchers of arteriovenous malformations of cerebral vessels have been presented. There have been briefly described the background of the problem, epidemiological data, and new ideas of embryogenesis of arteriovenous malformations. Present knowledge of morphological changes in brain substance and vessels in arteriovenous malformations has been given in detail.
